Apparently, I have "lost it."
Well, it's not the first time Matt has called anyone critical of his racism, misogyny, and general hateful negativity "crazy."
Funny thing is, he never addresses the arguments themselves – he only gets indignant at perceived slights over minute details, engages in hyperbolic misrepresentations of the other side, and never actually squarely faces up to the fact that the burden of proof should be on a site that stereotypes, misrepresents, and actively denigrates entire categories of people, religions, and nations.
Yet the site that calls him on it is the real "crazy" one.
Anyone who talks about race critically and square in the face is called by many people "paranoid" and irrational for even daring to accuse (ohhh, the horror!) a white person of being "racist." Many white expat bloggers love to wax philosophical about racism in Korea, feeling and thinking about being a "minority" in Asia, Hines Ward and the irony in the hype around him, and the many racist and/or nationalist, distorted representations of foreigners in the Korean media.
Murder in the Burger King. Spectrumgate. Fights with taxi drivers making national news. Shinchon knife incident. Distortions, misrepresentations, and generalizations made by Koreans bring out cries of racism left and right in the Korean blogosphere. Many of us quite enjoy taking the high-and-mighty stance, especially when it is obviously justified.
But why, when one argues that distortions, misrepresentations, and generalizations made against Korea might also be "racist" or "misogynist," do many white folks in the blogosphere act like you done lost your mind?
Some may call me "paranoid." i just think it's fair play.
When the racism detectors and fucked-up-shit-o-meters are turned up to "11" when it comes to everything Korea and everything in the direction away from the people wielding them, but people get all indignant and freaking out when one dares to point some critical acumen in the other direction, a lot of people are suspiciously quick to cry "foul."
There are indeed many things in life "that make you go, hmmmm."
