Fellow readers, how would you reply to this email? I've received several like it.
"I recently took a look at your blog and was just wanted to get your input on teaching in South Korea. I am thinking of taking a position there as an English teacher after I graduate from University this summer. It is the best paid option but I am a bit sceptical about the type of experience I would have there as a black Bahamian. Black bahamians generally have a rough go in foreign countries because one we are black, and two we have accents very much like northern Americans. I have experienced racism or 'ignorance' as I prefer to call it in other countries, but I am sure these countries were more liberal-minded/informed than South Korea despite these little bouts of tension. I would appreciate it if you could get back to me with some thoughts, words of advice, warning etc."
I can refer you to the podcast on that subject in the menu to the left, as well as the comments to this blog entry.
I hope response to this are clear in distinguishing between firsthand experience, the second-hand ones of people you directly know, and hearsay. Being clear about those means of "knowing" makes it a better conversation for everyone.
