Whatever the remnants of the ideological "Moral Majority" say, they're a bunch of frickin' hypocrites.
Because if Chelsea or any Democrat's daughter had gone and gotten herself knocked up and belly a-bulgin', it would have been a field day of how it was a failure of family values and evidence of how bereft such-and-such candidate was of basic mores, et cetera, ad infinitum.
You KNOW that's how it would have gone down.
Oh, but now, Palin's family is being "human" and the choice to keep the baby lauded as evidence of their value for life and a bunch of other assorted crap.
How about teaching birth control and the prevention of STD's? Maybe that would have helped out Palin's kid by preventing her from getting knocked the fuck up in the first place? But talking about penises and showing kids how to use condoms is also against the creed of these people -- the so-called "evangelical Christians."
Which is nearly as stupid as seeing the proper teaching of science -- frickin' SCIENCE! -- as some threat to one's belief. It's simple: biology, chemistry, and physics are just that. If you belief in the literal story of Genesis, the tooth fairy, or the divinity of Michael Jackson -- no one is interfering with that right.
But certain kinds of knowledge are required to live in a world that does require science and math and literacy to live. No one says anyone has to believe in ANYTHING they can't see -- the atoms and molecules whose existence is obfuscated by size, or the slow processes of natural selection that are impossible to discern because of the slow passage of time -- but you have to simply understand them and take the fucking test.
If you think the universe is made of the 4 immutable elements of earth, fire, wind, and water and that the solution to ailments is controlled bleeding to balance the "humours" in one's body -- fine. But you still need to have your kid understand what an electron, proton, and neutron are and atomic "theory." Just like the "theory" of evolution.
"But uhhhhh, duuuuuh -- that's just a 'theory.'"
Grrrrrrrrr! I can suffer a moron a bit more than I can a hypocrite, though. And let's be clear -- these evangelical Christians laying down the line around Palin's kid -- they're a bunch of stinkin' hypocrites.
Even crazy Korean evangelical Christians, as much as I despise them, know the deal when it comes to not trying to turn back time to the Middle Ages. You don't see them killing abortion doctors (and abortion is technically illegal in Korea) or stopping the teaching of evolutionary theory in schools.
Maybe a little basic knowledge of biology would actually clarify the American evangelicals' doctrine-based urges to effect social reform, but more in a direction that makes sense.
Don't get me wrong -- I'm not anti-Christian at all. I'm just anti-HYPOCRITICAL Christian, of which there are all too many these days. The ones who get it right -- the silent majority, I think -- just aren't trying to muck things up for the rest of us.
At least the STUPID Christians are consistent.
